There's now concern that far too many hospital patients get acid-suppressing drugs...and are kept on these drugs as outpatients.

Physicians routinely give H2-blockers or proton pump inhibitors to prevent stress ulcers while patients are hospitalized.

It's true that HIGH-RISK patients should get ulcer prophylaxis. These are generally ICU patients with a recent ulcer...severe trauma or burns...coagulation problems...those on respirators...etc.
