You'll see new warnings of liver dysfunction in patients taking acarbose (Precose, Prandase). There are over 60 reports...including two deaths.

We usually don't think of liver toxicity with acarbose since it works in the GI tract. Very little acarbose is even absorbed...but some of the metabolites are absorbed and might cause liver problems.

Liver dysfunction is more common at high doses.
