Powered brushes may have a slight edge over manual toothbrushes...for patients whose brushing technique is less than perfect.

Part of powered brushes' advantage may be that they have timers and detailed instructions to encourage more thorough brushing. They can reduce plaque and gingivitis more than a manual toothbrush...but aren't proven to further reduce the risk of cavities or gum disease.
