More patients will ask if they should take a probiotic.
The idea behind probiotics is to put "friendly" strains of bacteria (S. boulardii, Lactobacillus GG, etc) in the gut...to crowd out "bad" bacteria that lead to diarrhea, constipation, etc.
The problem is that very few probiotics actually have good evidence they work...even though shelves are flooded with products touting relief of everything from eczema to respiratory infections.
