Be Specific When Documenting Reactions to Iodine

Many patients say they’re allergic to iodine...but a true allergy to iodine is a misnomer.

In fact, iodine is found in the body...its major role is supporting thyroid function.

And having an “iodine allergy” in a patient’s profile may prevent them from getting iodine-containing meds (amiodarone, povidone-iodine, multivitamins, etc) or IV contrast agents prior to a CT scan. This is unnecessary and can compromise treatment.
