Zoloft (sertraline) has just been approved for panic disorder

Zoloft (sertraline) has just been approved for panic disorder. This is the second SSRI antidepressant for this indication...Paxil (paroxetine) was the first.

Many physicians now prefer using SSRIs for panic. They work at least as well as Xanax (alprazolam)...without causing dependence.

Start with lower doses of SSRIs for panic than those used for depression....25 mg/day of Zoloft...or 10 mg/day of Paxil. Paxil now comes in a 10 mg tablet for this use.
