A controversy is brewing over the natural sweetener, stevia.

Stevia (STEE-vee-uh) is widely used in Japan and other countries as an alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners like sucralose (Splenda) or aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal).

Stevia comes from a plant in the daisy family. Its leaves are much sweeter than sugar and it has no calories.
