OTC products for wound care

Patients often ask about OTC products for wound care.

Topical antiseptics (isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, povidone-iodine, etc) can be used to clean skin AROUND the wound.

But they shouldn't be used for cleansing the wound itself...they can be toxic to growing tissue and delay healing. It's a better idea to wash the wound out with clean water or normal saline instead.
