Oral steroids (prednisone, etc) are used to reduce inflammation in the lungs during "flare-ups" or worsening of the disease.

Expect to see smaller quantities on oral steroid Rxs for COPD exacerbations. Using them for 5 days seems to work as well as 7 or 14 days...and lowers the risk of developing unwanted side effects.
