Be Aware That Biotin May Skew Lab Test Results
Patients will ask whether the B vitamin biotin may interfere with lab tests.
Biotin can skew certain lab results because the tests themselves use biotin. In some cases, extra biotin causes falsely high results...and in others, it causes falsely low results.
For example, a patient taking biotin had a falsely low lab test measuring troponin...a protein that rises after the heart has been damaged. A heart attack diagnosis was missed, and the patient died.
