Parents are asking about famotidine (Pepcid) for autism...due to reports that it improves behaviour in some autistic children.
Physicians began trying this after they noticed that famotidine improves some schizophrenia symptoms such as withdrawal and poor communication skills. These symptoms resemble some of the ones seen in autism.
The theory is that famotidine blocks H2-receptors in the BRAIN...as well as the gut. Blocking H2-receptors in the brain is thought to reduce inhibition of activity and behaviour.
